A single omission did the trick. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally up to the player to fit into the strategic frameworks and team pecking order essential with England now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.
Tuchel desires the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is a matter of using it in the right way. Individual quality matters but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when stardom prevails. Still, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham was given food for thought after not being selected of the recent team selection. He observed England secure their spot at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched the young talent excel as a counterpressing No 10. He heard Tuchel talk about loving the group’s energy and values. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in winning fashion, netting important strikes for his club against Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; leaving him out again would have put his tournament chances in serious doubt.
The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder focused on frightening rivals rather than teammates. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has made him realize that playing for one's country is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel stated. “Bellingham possesses that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he reached. We all need to support him and create an environment which he can use that intensity in matches and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”
Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming final group games versus Serbia and the other. Any other news? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious No 10 who needs support and direction. Foden has not played for England since March and has found it hard to perform well recently but Tuchel could not ignore the player after his display in his club's victory versus Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, however, is the best way to deploy the various creators at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to pick Cole Palmer once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the tournament be too many? The previous manager never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting Harry Kane’s game as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager doing similar if it hurts the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who must play central. Tuchel prefers him near the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “Phil will play in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I have this vision about him for years. In my view it suits him best.”
He agreed there are occasions when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's his role, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also accustomed to playing for Man City in a particular setup, with a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
Tuchel talked about Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden drilling in goals from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue is high.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or Albania. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are other options should he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with his teammate going. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up Kane to score in an international match versus the Scots in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in many appearances for England when the duo linked up for a score. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where at some point it falls to the duty of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to be blunt. There is still a sense of the player having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an more effective one.
