It might not have been at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
