The Mystery Within the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?

For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the secret to his downfall for good.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a simple act of survival.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a dimension later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists took experimental components to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. This spy in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, which triggered the awakening of his powers—traits he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, much like how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to fortify himself.
