The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster last day of competition.
Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff victory against the same opponent.
The champion entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final green.
This set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To play with him the last two days was really special,” stated the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
