Following a pivotal victory at the Lusail Grand Prix, the reigning world champion has dramatically narrowed the deficit in the driver's standings. He now finds himself just a dozen points behind leader McLaren's Lando Norris and leading teammate Oscar Piastri, everything is in place for a nail-biting three-way championship battle at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit.
The Dutchman's most recent win was far from straightforward. Even though he delivered a superb drive for Red Bull, the race outcome was heavily influenced by a costly strategic move from the Woking-based team. Choosing to stay on track during an initial safety car period, the team inadvertently handed the race lead to Verstappen, who capitalized perfectly.
"I'm excited, I'm ready to go there and have a go at it," he stated. "My mindset is with just positive energy. I'll push to the limit I can but simultaneously, should I fall short, I still know that I had an incredible season."
This perspective he claims alleviates the pressure. The aim for the final round is clear: to maximize each opportunity from himself and the RB21.
The incredible part of this late-season charge so impressive is the distance he has recovered. Following the Dutch Grand Prix in late August, he was an enormous 104 points behind the then-leader his rival and had essentially conceded his title chances.
The shift began with major technical upgrades introduced by his team at the Monza. Modifications to the car's floor and aerodynamic package solved long-standing performance deficits, allowing the driver to regain confidence with the chassis once more.
Following those upgrades, the results has been utterly spectacular, achieving five victories and multiple podiums. He was quick to credit the teamwork behind this success.
"We've won races where maybe the odds were against us, by making the optimal strategy as a unit," he noted. "The way I work with my race engineer and the entire crew... we are perfectly synchronized."
Ahead of the head to Abu Dhabi, the championship picture is crystal clear.
The spotlight falls squarely on the papaya-colored cars, who have watched a comfortable advantage slip away due to recent setbacks, including a double disqualification in Las Vegas. In his view, this position creates an atmosphere of freedom, transforming the final race into a simple opportunity to attack with zero pressure.
