This Oscar-nominated actor Diane Ladd has died aged 89.
This star, with roles spanned National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, died at her home in California’s Ojai. Her passing was shared via an announcement shared by her daughter, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern, her daughter.
Her daughter, who appeared with Diane Ladd in various films like Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, described her as “my incredible hero plus my special gift of a mother”, noting that she was at her bedside as she died.
“She was the most wonderful daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that seemed almost dreamlike,” she stated. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”
The start of her career saw supporting roles in television programs including Gunsmoke and the 1970s featured her performing alongside the legendary Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.
During that year, the year 1974, she performed with actress Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s praised dramatic comedy the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance earned Ladd her first Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category.
During the eighties, she starred in the dramatic film Black Widow plus funny follow-up National Lampoon’s holiday comedy while also joining the sitcom Alice, a sitcom derived from the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the subsequent decade, she received an additional supporting actress Oscar nomination for her part in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she acted as the parent of her real-life daughter Dern’s character. The following year she received another nomination for her acting in Rambling Rose which included Laura Dern.
“This was the picture that the late Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she invited us to England for a special screening and a party dedicated to us,” Ladd said regarding Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, holding both our hands, and crying, seeing us act.”
That decade also saw roles in the comedy Cemetery Club joining her again with Ellen Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a comedy about politics, featuring John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she played the mother of Dern again. The decade also earned her Emmy nominations for work in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.
She persisted in performing with her daughter in comedy drama the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project the movie Inland Empire and Mike White’s satirical show Enlightened, a TV series. She was also seen next to Sandra Bullock in the film 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in that movie and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Her more recent television parts included Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.
She additionally penned and oversaw the comedy film the movie Mrs Munck featuring herself and previous spouse Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “It was a privilege to guide him on a project. Indeed, I’m the only woman in history to helm a film with her ex. I often joke: ‘I tell women, if you seek payback, direct your ex-husband.’ Though I’m just teasing.”
Ladd was also a relative of Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a great influence in my life”.
In 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with a pulmonary condition and informed she only had half a year left but she regained full health after her daughter transferred her to a new hospital.
“Should you harness your suffering and not let it back up similar to a wound, instead apply it to explore, to make the path clearer for you and those around, then you are winning,” Ladd expressed.
