Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins Following Recent Arrests

NBA game action

Miami recorded 86 first-half points versus the Grizzlies

The Heat claimed a decisive 146-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since player Rozier was detained for suspected illegal gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a extensive FBI investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the claims.

But, the Heat were not distracted as they scored eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later said Rozier had the support of the team.

"We support him. Full support," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."

Heat coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces the situation."

Portland also won their first game after the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 win against the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and how he coached," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events

Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

Silver further mentioned an NBA investigation into the player's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.

"We then looked into that situation and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.

"So, we've been cooperating from that point. And, of course, what they revealed yesterday was an charge.

"Moreover 30 months after, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in justice to Terry.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
