Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a collection of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.
He remarked in an announcement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have served, excited about the potential of the company, and anticipate tracking their advancement".
The prominent academic, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his relationship with Epstein.
The recently released messages revealed that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the AI firm said it understood Summers' choice to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," the company stated.
This development arrives after both chambers of Congress agreed on this week to approve a measure that would require the Department of Justice to release its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently move to the administration of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has said he expects to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the subject following objections from his supporters.
A group of Epstein-related emails released by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The emails showed that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with he often attempting to link the academic to notable world leaders.
After the messages were released with the public, the former official said he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he hoped "to restore faith and mend bonds with the people nearest to me".
The professor held high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a academic there. When declaring his step-down from public commitments previously on Monday, he said he would maintain his educational duties.
Following Summers' statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where he was a researcher, announced that he was ceased to be associated with the institution.
The former official entered the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the language model, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
