Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the property near the city of Verona to carry out an eviction order for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

Two individuals were arrested at the location and one more individual who escaped after the explosion was located shortly later. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area displayed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the property was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a floor above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the blast, he mentioned personnel had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed local news, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
