EU Lawmakers Decide to Prohibit Meat-Based Terms for Plant-Based Foods

In a significant vote on Wednesday, European Parliament members voted 355 to 247 to reserve food names including "steak" and "sausage" solely for animal-derived foods.

What the Decision Means

Should the measure is implemented, common plant-based products like plant-based burgers, tofu steak, and vegetable schnitzel could need to change their names throughout EU countries.

However, before the restriction to be enforced, it must gain approval from most of the 27 EU countries, something that remains uncertain.

Key Debate Surrounding the Measure

Proponents argue that consumers need clear information and that traditional names should only describe products derived from animals.

"An escalope and sausages represent goods from animal farming: not from laboratory art nor plant products," said France's MEP Céline Imart.

Critics, including environmental lawmakers, described the decision populist tactics.

"Veggie burgers, wheat schnitzel and tofu sausage don't mislead consumers, just certain lawmakers," declared Austrian Green MEP Thomas Waitz.

Previous Efforts and Judicial Context

The marks another effort to control such terminology. The European parliament voted down a similar prohibition in four years ago.

The French government previously enacted a domestic restriction on meat terms for vegetarian products in recent years, but EU courts determined it invalid under European legislation in 2024.

Business and Public Response

Leading Germany's supermarkets including Aldi and Lidl oppose the proposal, warning that changing familiar names would confuse shoppers.

Consumer groups cite surveys showing that most shoppers understand product labels when items are clearly marked as vegan.

"Nearly 70% of shoppers understand the terminology as long as products are explicitly marked vegan or vegetarian," noted Irina Popescu, a consumer officer at BEUC.

What Following the Vote

This proposal now requires review by European governments, where it needs to obtain broad approval to be enacted.

Considering the mixed opinions among various politicians and the public, the outcome of the proposal is still uncertain.
