Figures from both sides of the partisan aisle and the Hollywood world are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". In a message, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Authorities have since confirmed the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. Reports indicate his bail was established at a significant sum.
The response to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
“What a disgusting and vile comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Some GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his party to justify the statements.
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the killing of another individual.
Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
