The child of ex- South African Head of State Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related accusations at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over remarks she posted on social media several years back during fatal protests in South Africa that followed the arrest of her parent.
A week of anarchy in various areas of the country in July 2021, including plundering and fire-setting, caused at least 300 killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).
The defendant has been charged of fuelling this unrest and confronts allegations of encouragement to commit terror acts and public violence.
The protests were concentrated in the provinces of Gauteng and KZN and were triggered by the ex-leader's arrest for defying a legal directive to testify at an probe into accusations of impropriety while he was holding office.
She has repeatedly denied the accusations against her, with her lawyer previously describing the government's legal argument as insufficient.
She has also frequently said the charges against her were an effort to settle political disputes with her parent after he established his own party and ran against the ANC.
This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which said the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and familial persecution" against the previous head of state and his family.
A handful of followers from her group, her party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her father and other organization officials participated in the court sessions inside.
The defense has argued that the evidence presented by government lawyers is inadequate and does not have substantial grounds for a conviction.
The trial continues as both sides present their evidence before the judicial authority in what is projected to be a carefully observed court case with significant policy ramifications for South Africa.
