A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the year.

The successful bid for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets domestically and overseas.

"The year's tuna signals fortune," stated the company president, a notable figure at the annual new year's auction.

Dubbed the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is renowned for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Past

After the auction, the winner told reporters that he was "surprised at the amount," noting, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price escalated rapidly."

This most recent purchase surpasses his previous record purchases:

  • He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to break his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously associated with exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which stated the fish would be available at its locations throughout the country.

The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Swift Service

The record-priced tuna was quickly processed for customers at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.

"I sense like I've started the year in a good way after tasting something so auspicious as the year starts," said one happy patron.
