Host nation Morocco overcame a nervy beginning to beat their island opponents in the tournament's inaugural fixture on the weekend, after strikes by Brahim DĂaz and substitute Ayoub El Kaabi in the latter period.
It was a far from convincing showing, however, from the heavily tipped Moroccans, who sit 97 places higher than the small Indian Ocean nation in the FIFA rankings and had to toil hard for the points in rainy conditions at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.
The hosts failed to convert an early penalty and were goalless at half-time despite dominating possession, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.
The goal arrived after Noussair Mazraoui did well to prevent the ball from going out before laying it square for DĂaz to calmly pass home.
Every first match is always difficult but we improved in the second period,” said manager Regragui.
The tension was then extinguished by a moment of pure genius from substitute El Kaabi. Only ten minutes after his introduction, the striker met a cross with a spectacular overhead kick in the 74th minute, making it two and sealing the result.
Before that, the hosts could have been the lead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was given for a foul on DĂaz. However, Soufiane Rahimi penalty was kept out by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.
The underdogs stoutly defended against their more illustrious opponents at bay until the hosts' greater quality eventually made the difference.
Goalkeeper Yannick Pandor made a number of other good stops to keep down the scoreline as the game wore on, although Comoros created a clear opportunity for an equalizer shortly following the first goal, with SaĂŻd shooting directly into keeper Bounou.
The three points was partially overshadowed by an injury to Morocco's captain, Romain SaĂŻss, who was forced off after the first half in tears.
This centre-back had only returned to the international setup recently after a lengthy layoff caused by ankle surgery.
This result extends Morocco's historic run of consecutive wins to nineteen, surpassing the old record of 15 set by the Spanish national team from 2008 and 2009.
