“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” was chanted around the ground as Forest followers celebrated a further success against their Swedish opponents. Much has transpired since Trevor Francis’s decisive header clinched the European Cup back in 1979, but Forest still hold dear those glorious moments. Similarly, major shifts have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with the team looking refreshed and securing a convincing victory courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of advancing in the European competition.
For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had not played for nearly a month after ending sixth in their home competition – represented a third straight win across every tournament and further built on the momentum generated from last weekend’s success at Liverpool. While this fixture was a re-run of Forest’s European Cup triumph in name, the encounter itself was free of any real jeopardy or jitters.
This was an event dripping in sentiment, an longed-for reunion and the third competitive clash between the sides since the showpiece event 46 years ago.
Forest fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the heroes of that era by giving them, along with their visiting counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s team from that time were also in attendance. Both teams enjoyed a dinner together prior to the match. Forest legends and company were given a rousing reception when they gathered on the field a quarter of an hour before the start, and a characteristically impressive display was shown in the Trent End.
“May 30, 1979, Robertson delivered the ball from the left flank,” displayed half of a giant tifo, in block capitals. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the remaining section was revealed as the players came out from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it continued. A second stunning tifo depicted Clough watching events beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Munich stadium.
So, Forest had drunk in those beautiful memories, but what about the performance on the night? It was strong, as well. They were in complete control from the moment the forward whistled an attempt wide inside two minutes and built a 2-0 lead by the half-time interval. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.
It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who came to Forest aged eight, made the first dent in the visitors' defense captained by their own homegrown skipper, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a defender and into the path of the midfielder, who swept home right-footed from just inside the penalty area to score his first goal since March.
Yates was implicated in Forest’s second goal on the brink of the interval, too, his unmarked header parried by the goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward poised to convert the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and only his second appearance since September, was the catalyst, lofting a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.
A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was deflected wide off Malmö defender Colin Rösler, the son of former Manchester City forward Uwe, and an unmarked Milenkovic also previously had a strong header smartly saved by the keeper, who returned in place of the ex- Aston Villa goalkeeper Olsen.
This was Malmö’s first match since the domestic league ended on November 9th, and they found it hard to equal Forest’s intensity. The Reds made it 3-0 when the defender scored after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a corner. The captain had a volley stopped, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.
Forest then went for the jugular, with the winger dinking a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an ambitious shot off target from 30 yards. It was one of those nights. The manager, mindful of the upcoming league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made multiple alterations from the side that stunned Liverpool at their ground last weekend, when they additionally scored three goals, though he introduced substitutes and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.
It turned out to be a hiccup-free night for Forest. Dyche could withdraw the defender with the game long since sewn up and subsequently introduced teenage defender Jimmy Sinclair for his first-team debut. He discussed the club legends providing “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad showed they are capable of producing of excitement, too.
