In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
