Addressing the Cashier Who Left Me Completely Wordless – I Salute You
This occurred on a day of rest, and I felt grumpy enough, topping off my mother's vehicle. The location was a typical gas station that operates as a grocery store, meaning there's a chance of ending up in line customers carrying goods of slightly overpriced groceries. A terrible fate to unfold when your only desire is to complete a simple refueling. Dreadful.
I was fourth among those waiting. There was only employee working, a young woman. A peculiar quality about her. Once the slowpoke at the head of the line had finally paid for his purchases, his sausage roll, and his box of eggs, I was certain that I heard the cashier wish him to have a great day. Unusual. Maybe it was a mistake, or possibly she uttered it and meant it ironically. The thought crossed my mind if perhaps she was a comrade in my fight against faff, reflecting my irritation for individuals slowing down simple fuel-buyers including me.
Taking a step forward, to third in the queue. The next shopper of the queue completed her gasoline purchase with commendable speed. Once more it happened: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” In fact, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? In Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and hardly anyone here tells people such a cheerful phrase, or even just a nice day. Quite out of place. Rarely does one encounter many Americans visiting this town, least of all employed at gas stations or other places.
I was second now. After an elderly lady engaged in a right old battle with her basket, her food items, her purse and her loyalty card. This took an eternity. When she was done, she too was wished to have a fantastic day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by making a witty remark in her direction, to check for that reaction as they gaze at you, stoically, and say with absolute sincerity: “You are very amusing.” But I couldn’t think of a jest to utter.
I just had to settle for the absolute sincerity – or a mimicry of sincerity, essentially the same as no different – with which she looked straight at me, deep into my soul, and bid me a wonderful day. I felt better for it. A positive experience.
