Including total beginners will rapidly be ascending sheltered regional crags on this two-day course. Participants will learn tying in, safety techniques and multiple climbing techniques, along with abseiling down. Limited to six learners to a single guide, there is plenty of one-on-one guidance and custom goals. The course is open to all individuals aged 13 and over, from absolute beginners to those with some indoor experience. This is a non-accommodation course, but there is a list of recommended, reasonably-priced places to stay close by, including campsites, hostels, B&Bs and pubs with rooms. The venue is a short stroll from Bamford railway station, which is on the rail route from Manchester to Sheffield.

This historic hillside village, a picturesque white village in AndalucĂa, about 45 minutes’ drive from Granada, is the breathtaking setting for this art retreat. Participants of all abilities – including beginners – will learn how to conceive and execute modern art. Part of the schedule will be spent outside, working on tutorials en plein air. These sketches and watercolour studies will then be worked on in the workspace, with guests producing several interpretive scenes in acrylics to be shown in the local community. The group has sole use of the hotel, which is set around an central patio and has a sun terrace with panoramic vistas over the countryside. The fee encompasses five days’ art instruction; all meals; and an outing to the local castle and additional points of interest.

This sun-drenched foodie getaway, based at a villa by the river in the central Portuguese region, is inspired by the vegetarian dishes of celebrated cooks. Attendees will learn to produce meze spreads, take part in a hands-on falafel session, refine mid-morning meals such as shakshuka, and make hearty mains including a rich mushroom stew and moussaka. There are trips to the village market and a nearby winery to sample Portuguese wines, along with free time for walks by the Funcho River, to relax on the deck or swim in the pool. This energetic camp is an uplifting, welcoming three-day adults’ street dance camp in High Wycombe. The daily schedule throughout the camp is a party-style warm-up session, then three hour-and-a-half workshops covering different urban dance forms, then an hour-long freestyle session to show off those solos. Dancers are divided into levels according to skill level, so it is perfect for those who are brand new to street dance, right up to advanced dancers or teachers. The camp doesn’t include accommodation but there are a number of hostels and hotels within walking distance, and it is under an hour by rail into London.

This coastal town is the ideal spot for a maritime music retreat. Participants will be taught traditional shanties from a folk singer and vocal coach, and try their hand at composing original ones. Author and lecturer an experienced instructor conducts the regular sessions on this writing retreat. He explores everything from story structure, character development, locations and suspense, to submitting work to agents. Greg’s wife, the well-known writer Kate Mosse, will participate in events at the start and finish of the week. The retreat is based at a village-style hotel in Vamos at the foot of the White mountains – ten private accommodations surround a garden and pool (non-writing partners are welcome to share). On the final evening, aspiring writers celebrate with a musical performance in the garden and a final meal.

A leading eco-centre near Machynlleth runs a host of courses on sustainability: from creating habitats to upcycling. This weekend introduction will help participants get to grips with the basics of apiary management, study the biology of bees and learn about their environmental benefits. It is designed to produce “bee-friendly beekeepers”. This course is also a chance to de-stress in the centre's sustainably managed forests, which are habitat for wildlife, otters, dormice, lesser horseshoe bats and uncommon bird species. These recently launched summer sailing weekends are spent on dinghies and Dufours on the Blackwater estuary. They are aimed at adult beginners learning the ropes or those with some knowledge who want a skills update.
